Controversial mega projects
Large-scale infrastructure projects approved and supported by the World Bank tend to attract numerous export credit agencies and private banks eager to offer additional financing. The World Bank usually argues that its participation in controversial projects at the very least ensures that environmental and social standards will be met. But that’s not always true. The World Bank was harshly criticized for its participation in the Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline from Azerbaijan to Turkey because of alleged human rights abuses and unresolved questions regarding the correct use of revenue. After staying away from giant projects in recent years, the World Bank under its new president Wolfowitz has indicated that it wants to get more involved in so-called high-risk projects in 2006.
